Are Car Battery Carriers Really a Necessity?

A car battery’s weight varies on the size of the battery, but is normally between 30 lbs. to 50 lbs. with most batteries around 41 lbs. This is not a lightweight and therefore carrying a car battery requires care to avoid necessary injury to your back. With the use of battery carrier, lifting car battery from one place to another enables an ergonomic approach to the process and helps avoid possible back strain or injury.

But battery carriers are beyond just back protection, it prevents possible battery acid burns. Batteries are composed of various materials and chemicals including acid and mercury, and nickel metal hydride. When batteries are not handled properly the casing can break down or leak and the toxic chemicals within can cause acid burn which is very harmful to the human skin. This is where the use of a car battery carrier comes handy.

There are various types and forms of car battery carriers in the market today. Here are some of the more popular car battery carriers –

Sure Grip Battery Carrier – is a safe and one-handed car battery carrying device which works on both the 6 and 12 Volt side post and top post batteries.

OEM Battery Carrier 25283 – is a safe and comfortable way to seize and lift batteries, has plastic handle grip which delivers a firm hold, with rubber pads to safely grip battery widths from 5” to 7”. This carries both top post and side post batteries.

Mechanic Battery Carrier Secure Hold Lifter – is a universal battery carrier devised to transfer lifting force to a safe hold on the battery. The teeth on the jaws provide a secure grip. This is used for both top post and side post batteries and has a vinyl strap which repels battery acid and will not charge electricity.

Lisle Universal Battery Carrier 57850 Ice Tong Design – has saw-tooth jaw tips which provide a non-slip gripping power.

CTA Tools 3110 – Battery Carrier – has jaws that lock onto the battery for grabbing, lifting, and carrying. Also works on both side-terminal and top-post batteries.

Lynx Battery Carrie 00226 – has saw tooth gripping arms which grasp tightly on all surfaces. This has heavy duty construction and repels acid.

OTC 4620 Universal Battery Carrier – is created to move lifting force to a secure hold on the battery. Has teeth on jaws which ensure a safe grip. For use on both top post and side terminal batteries and with vinyl strap to repel battery acid and does not charge electricity.

With the availability of the car battery carriers, we need to be reminded to never lift or carry car battery by the terminals. Regardless if they are positioned on the side or top of the battery, terminals should be handled with care and never to be used to lift, move, carry or secure a car battery. Any damage to the terminal can totally damage the entire battery.

Also, we must make sure to select only those car battery carriers whose material composition does not conduct or charge electricity.

In summary, car battery carriers offer us safety through preventing back injury and preventing accidental acid burns. Hands down a definite necessity.
